About AFEC
The Australian Financial Education Company is an independent Australian initiative dedicated to improving financial understanding among young people.
We were founded in response to a clear and growing gap: too many Australians grow up without a practical understanding of money, risk, and financial decision-making, despite these concepts shaping major life outcomes from an early age.
AFEC exists to address that gap through structured, practical financial education designed to enhance long-term outcomes.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to ensure every Australian, regardless of background, has access to clear, practical financial education that builds judgment, resilience, and long-term capability, strengthening individual lives and the nation as a whole.
Our Founder
Australian Financial Education Company was founded by Fletcher Waddell after watching too many young Australians make financial decisions they didn't understand and couldn't easily undo.
Growing up, Fletcher stumbled into financial literacy online, becoming obsessed with compound interest and debt management before most of his peers knew what superannuation was. Years later, after studying financial planning and working in the industry, he continuously saw the same pattern repeat: intelligent people making costly mistakes not because they lacked ambition, but because no one had taught them how money actually works.
The moment that stuck with him was seeing a Year 12 graduate buy a $50,000 Mercedes on a part-time McDonald's wage (without parental support). It wasn't jealousy. It was a red flag. No one had explained debt-to-income ratios, opportunity cost, or depreciation. And that gap in understanding would follow them for years.
AFEC exists to close that gap.
